Hamilton, John
(16 Sept. 1827-18 May 1915), resort proprietor. Born on Hamilton Island. Parents: Mr and Mrs William Hamilton. Hamilton Island (or Hamilton’s Island), near Summerstown, is one of the larger islands in Lake St. Francis. Except for a few years near Belleville, John Hamilton spent the whole of his long life on the island. He died at his home on the island. His obituary in the Cornwall Standard said “Many residents of this section, as well as those from Montreal, Ottawa and other places, who have made their summer home at Hamilton’s Island,… will regret to learn of the death of the owner of that popular resort.” John Hamilton was presumably regarded in his lifetime as the effective owner of the island, but some years after his death the federal government reclaimed the title to the island for the St. Regis Indians. He was married to Miss Mary Jack, of Summerstown. He left no surviving children. The island was important in the recreational life of several generations of Glengarrians. For example, in a notable event, on 30 July 1895, the Patrons of Industry of GC held a “monster picnic” on Hamilton’s Island.
