Harkness, Andrew

(14 Feb. 1845-6 Feb. 1907), physician. Born at Brinston, Ont. Parents: John Harkness, an emigrant from County Tyrone, Ireland, and his wife Catherine Fetterly, who was of U E Loyalist descent. Andrew Harkness inherited the family farm but he traded it with his older brother for a medical education. He attended Iroquois High School and McGill (medical degree, 1869). He practised medicine at Inkerman, Ont., 1869-1870, came to Lancaster village in 1870 on the departure of Dr Thomas Ross, and practiced medicine there till his death. He was one of the leaders in the campaign in 1892-1893 to prevent GC from separating from SDG. At a banquet at Lancaster in 1893, he and Alexander A. Stewart (warden of SDG in 1892) were presented with “very handsome clocks” for their work against separation. (Harkness 472) An active gardener, Dr Harkness was noted for his fine orchard and vineyard, located at the site of the present Lancaster post office. He was active also in promoting the Mechanics Institute (now the public library) in Lancaster. Dr Harkness died at his home in Lancaster. (four children) Presbyterian. He was married (1) to Harriet (Hattie) Graham (d. 1870), and (2) on 7 Dec. 1871, at Lancaster, to Janet Ross (d. 6 Sept. 1925), the sister of his medical predecesssor Dr Ross and of Mrs Bathia Fortune. Dr Harkness was buried in the Harkness cemetery, Brinston, Ont. He was the uncle of the historian J.G. Harkness.
