Kellert, Jacob
(1872-5 Feb. 1942). Born at Lancaster, GC. When he was 10 years old, he moved to Montreal with his family. The Lancaster columnist in The Cornwall Reporter of 20 Jan. 1883, referring presumably to Jacob Kellert’s father, stated that “Mr Kellert, one of our oldest and most respected merchants,” has sold out to Neil McGillis and is planning to establish himself on a larger scale in Montreal. In 1890, a Lancaster columnist (Glengarrian 14 Feb. 1890) noted that H. Kellert, “of Montreal, formerly of Lancaster, was in town on Wednesday.” Jacob Kellert, the subject of the present article, lived in Montreal for more than 50 years, and is described as “prominent in Montreal Jewish circles,” and “a life governor of several philanthropic institutions.” He was president of the Baron de Hirsch Institute, and was a member, till his retirement in 1932, of the firm H. Kellert & Sons. Jacob Kellert died in Montreal. He was married (1) to Sadie Vineburg, (three children surviving him), and (2) to May Levinson.
