Laporte, Leo (Leonardo Laporta)

(died 16 May 1962, in his 90th year), skilled stonemason and bricklayer, market gardener. Born in Italy. Parents: Leonardo Laporta and his wife Anna Maria Tardio. He went to New York City in 1895, and later moved to Montreal, Cornwall and Alexandria. As a stonemason, he was in demand for canal work, working on probably both the Soulanges and Cornwall Canals. In Alexandria, where he lived for over 60 years, he worked as a stonemason on St. Finnan’s Cathedral, the Bishop’s Palace and the Royal Bank building. In later years, he was a vegetable gardener in Alexandria. He was married at St. Finnan’s Cathedral, on 7 Jan. 1896, to Adele (Ida) Dapratto (d. 1958), daughter of Xavier DaPrato. Leo Laporte died at the Hotel Dieu Hospital, Cornwall. (children surviving him: 9) He is buried in St. Finnan’s cemetery. In Alexandria he was known by the French form of his surname, Laporte. He was the father of Albert, Arthur and Sébastien Laporte. The last to die of his children, Mrs Celima DeGiorgio, of Montreal, died, aged 96, at the Community Nursing Home, Alexandria, 19 June 2006.
