Leroux, Roméo

(8 June 1906-8 July 1979), agricultural expert. (Romeo Leroux) Born in the 4th Concession of Kenyon Township, in the Greenfield area of GC. Parents: Michel Leroux and his wife Philomene Cedilotte. Romeo Leroux grew up in the 4th of Kenyon, and after attending high school at Alexandria for one year, he spent ten years working with his father on the family farm. In the years 1929-1931, he worked as a fieldman for the Livestock Branch of the Ontario Dept. of Agriculture. At this time, he was involved in the first tuberculin tests for dairy herds in GC. He next attended the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC), graduating in 1935 with his B. S. A. degree. He was ag rep for the Sudbury district for over 30 years, extending from Sept. 1935, soon after his graduation from OAC, till Jan. 1966. In Feb. 1966 he became associate director of the Dept. of Agriculture’s extension branch for Northern Ontario (senior agricultural co-ordinator for Northern Ontario). He retired in 1971. He was married in 1939 to Lillian Tyne (d. 1977), of Chelmsford, Ont., near Sudbury. He died at the General Hospital, Sudbury. (two children) Roman Catholic. His article “Le sol et l’agriculture du comté de Sudbury,” was published in La société historique du Nouvel-Ontario: Documents historiques, No. 1 (Sudbury, 1942) pp. 29-32. He was presumably the brother of the Glengarrian Joseph Hector Leroux (Hector Leroux) (d. at Ottawa 21 Sept. 1999, aged 85) who graduated from OAC with a B. S. A. in 1944.
