Levac, Lionel

(died 19 Nov. 1995), apiarist. Parents: John Levac and his wife Lucia Sauvé. Following several years as a WWII tool and die worker at a munitions plant at Lachute, Que., Lionel Levac returned to Green Valley, and there he worked for a Mr St. Jean who owned a honey business. Afterwards, Lionel Levac bought the honey business and ran it successfully till his retirement. This well-known firm, which celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2005, and is today known as Levac Apiaries, was operated from 1978 by Lionel’s son Marcel, and then by Marcel’s daughter Joanne and her husband Mark Lauterbach. Located within the Green Valley district, and with its headquarters at the Brown House Corner (which is where Highway 34 crosses the King’s Road), the firm produces honey from its own hives and also purchases honey within Eastern Ontario, an area which a member of the family described in 2006 as having its own distinctive flavour. Lionel Levac, who was a skilled carpenter, built the pews for St. Raphael’s Church. He died at Glen-Stor-Dun Lodge, Cornwall. (six children, five surviving him) Roman Catholic. His wife Mary Rose (Marie Rose) Lefebvre survived him to die 3 May 2005. (Glengarry News 11 May 2005)
