MacCrimmon, Henry James
(28 Aug. 1881-24 April 1956), construction man. (Major Henry J. MacCrimmon, H. J. MacCrimmon, Harry MacCrimmon) Born at Lancaster or Williamstown, GC. Parents: Donald MacCrimmon, who operated a general store at Lancaster and afterwards at Williamstown, and his wife Sarah McKenzie. In WWI, he enlisted at Montreal 20 March 1915, embarked for England 14 June of that year, served in England and France with the Canadian Overseas Railway Construction Corps, and was discharged on 2 April 1919, in the general demobilization. He was mentioned twice in dispatches, and was a major by the end of his period of service. It was reported in 1916 that Lt. H. J. MacCrimmon, a member of the Construction Corps, was about to marry a nurse he had met while he was in hospital recovering from wounds. (Glengarry News 16 Nov. 1916) By demobization in 1919, Major MacCrimmon, as he then was, had a wife. When Major MacCrimmon died, the Glengarry News obituary stated, “Though most of his days were spent far from Glengarry, Major MacCrimmon always kept up his ties with his native county. He paid frequent visits to Williamstown and this paper followed him through the years to many a farflung construction site.” His wife was Alison B. Armstrong (1887-1932). (three children) They are buried at St. Andrew’s cemetery, Williamstown. His brother Duncan Daniel MacCrimmon (1879-1951) was a WWI captain who served in France and was awarded the Military Cross in 1916.
