MacDonald, Angus Donald or Duncan

(1891- ?), piper. (Angus (Katie) MacDonald, Angus “Katie” MacDonald, Pipe Major Angus D. MacDonald, Angus Katie, Angus Duncan Angus Katie) Born in Alexandria, GC. Parents: Angus McDonald and his wife Katie. His branch of the MacDonalds had the name Katie attached to them, as a sub-surname, from this or another ancestress called Katie. Angus Katie, as he was most usually known, is said to have belonged to the 7th generation of pipers in his family. When he was about 17, he took piping lessons from Neil McVean. After McVean moved to Lachine, MacDonald himself became a teacher of piping in the GC area. Altogether, MacDonald served the GC area as a piper over some 60 years. Deeply involved in the work of the militia, he played in the bands of all three of the 59th, the 154th, and the SDG Highlanders. He was awarded the Coronation medal of 1953. (Glengarry News 19 Nov. 1953) At this time, he had been involved in regimental piping for some 45 years. Peter MacInnes, who took piping lessons from him, later employed Angus and his two sons in an electrical contracting business. Angus D. MacDonald, at that time a corporal in the 154th, was married at St. Catherine’s Church, Greenfield, 14 Aug. 1916, to Janet McDonald, of Kenyon Township. (GN 18 Aug. 1916)
