(4 June 1879-21 Feb. 1952), farmer. (Lorne MacDonald, D. Lorne MacDonald) Born at Glen Andrew, Ont. (Glen Andrew is just east of the GC-Prescott County border.) Parents: Thomas MacDonald, of Glen Andrew, a farmer, and his wife Margaret Wharry. He attended Glen Andrew Public School, worked in his early years in the Minnesota lumber camps and on CPR bridge-building crews in B. C., bought a farm at Kirk Hill, GC, in 1910, and there built up a high quality Holstein herd in co-operation with his neighbour Donald W. MacLeod. MacDonald was a progressive farmer and a noted contributor to community activities. The biographical sketch prepared for his induction (1992) into the Glengarry Agricultural Wall of Fame notes that he is remembered not “for a specific field of excellence” but for achievement “exceptional in many fields.” The same source states that the buildings he constructed on his farm at Kirk Hill, using the expertise gained during his employment in Minnesota and B. C., “are still standing today and have been copied on farms throughout the area since.” In 1951, his Holstein herd was divided between his sons Campbell and Kenneth, who continued farming at Kirk Hill. As Holstein owners, Campbell took the herd prefix of Don Hope in 1957, and Kenneth took the herd prefix of Donelg in 1962 .

     Lorne MacDonald was married (1) on 16 Sept. 1914 at Kirk Hill to Mary Netta MacLeod (1889-1930), and (2) on 3 May 1933, at Vankleek Hill, to Annie Mabel Lothian (1889-1976). Lorne MacDonald died at his home at Kirk Hill and is buried at the Kirk Hill United Church Cemetery. (five children, all by the first marriage) He was an elder of the United Church, and an Orangeman.
