MacDonell, Duncan J.
(died 24 Nov. 1962), police officer. (Dunc MacDonell, Chief of Police Duncan MacDonell) He is described as a native of Green Valley, GC, and presumably he was born at Green Valley. He joined the Ottawa Police on 8 March 1920. He rose through the ranks, holding positions including beat officer, motorcycle traffic officer, and detective. In June 1942, he was appointed inspector of detectives. (Glengarry News 19 June 1942) From 1 Jan. 1948 till 3 Dec. 1958 he was chief constable (this was the formal title for police chief) of the Ottawa Police. Previously, in the final months of 1947, he had been acting chief constable. At the end of 1947, the Ottawa Police force had 197 members and a budget of about half a million dollars. He was married in 1920 to Sadie Macdonell of Greenfield, Ont. (four sons) One of their sons, Stuart A. MacDonell, 22, was killed in action in World War II. (GN 16 March 1945) Another son, Bennett (Benny), was a noted player on the Ottawa Rough Riders football team, and died in 1968.
