MacDougall, George Herbert

(1881-14 March 1963), storekeeper. (Bert MacDougall, George H. MacDougall, G. H. MacDougall, G. Herbert MacDougall) Born in Maxville, GC. Parents: Duncan Peter MacDougall and his wife Janet McEwen. He attended Alexandria High school. For many years he and his wife operated a general store, called the People’s Store, on the Main Street of Maxville. A substantial general store of the traditional type well known in GC at the time, the People’s Store sold groceries, clothing and other dry goods, kitchenware, and farm feeds, and took farm produce in trade. In 1910 he was married to Dora Barrett (d. 1979). (no children) He was a Congregationalist, then later a member of United Church and a United Church elder. He was a Mason for over 50 years. A well-known, well-regarded citizen, he served as reeve of Maxville. He bought his Maxville store in 1911 from J. J. Wightman. Previously, he was employed in the store. His store and home were destroyed by fire in early 1940, but he had re-opened his rebuilt premises before the end of the year. (Glengarry News 2 Feb. & 1 Nov. 1940) In 1951, after operating his general store for 40 years, he sold it to H. A. Quart. (GN 2 March 1951) Retired since 1951, he died at Cornwall General Hospital. He was the brother of Frank MacDougall.
