MacGillivray, Archibald Duncan
(19 Sept. 1844-17 Dec. 1920), businessman. (Archibald D. MacGillivray, Archibald MacGillivray, Archie MacGillivray) Born presumably on his parents’ farm, which was on Lot 10 in the 7th Concession of Lochiel Township, near Dalkeith, GC. Parents: Duncan McGillivray (d. 10 Nov. 1884, aged 87), who was the brother of Edward McGillivray, mayor of Ottawa, and his wife Margaret McCuaig (d. 25 June 1878, aged 76). He “was educated in the Public School and Ottawa University, and first engaged in construction work on the Grenville Canal. Later he played his part in the building of the Canada Atlantic Railway.”
About 1875 he settled in Alexandria, opening a livery-stable business. He “in 1886 took over the Furniture and Undertaking business of the late Mr. Hugh C. McDonald which he carried on successfully to the time of his demise.” In the warmly appreciative obituary in the Glengarry News, MacGillivray was described as “one of [Alexandria’s] most esteemed citizens.” He was married on 28 Sept. 1873 to Charlotte Anne Chisholm (Charlotte Chisholm, spelling also Ann), of Fassifern. (eight children surviving him) She was probably the sister of the wife of John A. McDougald of Alexandria, and the MacGillivray children would be thus first cousins of the children of this distinguished McDougald family, and would have a connection also with the McMartins of the Hollinger connection. (See entries for W. L. McDOUGALD, &c., and for Mrs John McMartin) Newspaper sources show that there was much socializing over the years between the McDougalds and Archie MacGillivray’s grown children. MacGillivray was a Presbyterian, but his wife was a Roman Catholic, and they maintained their separate religions. Their house was on Mill Square, Alexandria. The children of the marriage included E. A. MacGillivray and Archibald MacGillivray, Jr., a daughter Edith who was a nurse decorated by the British government in 1919 with the British Royal Red Cross (Glengarry News 1 Aug. 1919), and a daughter who was married to Judge H. P. Owen, of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Archie MacGillivray was the brother of the unfortunate Dr Donald McGillivray.
