MacIntosh, John Hampden
(12 Aug. 1884-28 Feb. or 1 March 1947), physician. (Hampden MacIntosh, John H. MacIntosh) Born at Dominionville, GC. Parents: John D. MacIntosh and his wife Mary Ann Ferguson, who was a sister of James Ferguson, the manufacturer of the Ferguson Thresher. Hampden MacIntosh attended Alexandria High School, Queen’s University and the University of Toronto. In his earlier years, he taught school in GC. He received his degree in medicine from the University of Toronto in 1910. He briefly practised medicine at Apple Hill, but by the fall of 1910, he was preparing to establish his practice at the village of Riceville, in Prescott County, north of Maxville. (Glengarry News 25 Nov. 1910) At Riceville, Dr Hampden MacIntosh practised medicine through a third of a century till he was disabled by a stroke in Dec. 1944. This well known, well-regarded country doctor died at his home in Riceville. Many children in the area are said to have been named Hampden from him. For winter transport in his practice, in those days of unplowed winter roads, he operated an early version of the snowmobile, which is said to have had a propellor. He played in a local band, which he founded. On 11 Aug. 1915 he was married to Annie Louise Wilson (1886-1954), of Riceville. (two children) Dr MacIntosh was a Mason. In 1939 he was one of the ex-students who were pallbearers at the funeral of Donald MacKay. (Glengarry News 12 May 1939) His sister Gretta was married to the newspaper editor David Bruce MacRae.
