Maclennan, Farquhar Stuart

(1860-18 June 1925), judge. (F. S. Maclennan, Farquhar S. Maclennan; sp. McLennan found for his earlier years; Justice Maclennan, Judge Maclennan) Born in GC, probably on Lot 31, 2nd Concession of Lancaster Township, but at a place described in print simply as “Lancaster.” Parents: Donald T. McLennan and his wife Sarah, whose surname seems also to have been McLennan. He attended Williamstown High School, Brantford Collegiate Institute, and McGill University (B. C. L., 1884), and was admitted to the bar of Quebec, 1884. In Montreal, where he practised law, he was law partner of Donald MacMaster (later Sir Donald) for 18 years, having earlier been a law student in Macmaster’s office. Maclennan was created Q. C. in 1899. From 1911 to 1915 he was city attorney for Westmount. He was appointed judge of the Superior Court of the district of Montreal in Feb. 1915, holding this position till his death. While holding this judgeship, his tasks included hearing petitions for exemption from military service during WWI. He also served as local judge in admiralty and chairman of the Labour Appeal Board. He died suddenly from heart trouble, collapsing on the street while walking home. (one child) Presbyterian, and Presbyterian elder. He was married in June 1890 to Katie M. Owens, the daughter of Senator William Owens of Argenteuil County and Montreal.

Maclennan was active in Conservative politics, being president in 1908 of the Westmount Conservative Association. (His brother John A. Maclennan, a farmer in GC, was by contrast a prominent Liberal, and president of the Glengarry Liberal Association.) F. S. Maclennan was interested in Scottish heritage, belonged to the St. Andrew’s Society and Caledonian Society in Montreal, and for some years held the title of chief of the Clan MacLennan. It appears, however, that his claim to the chiefship, whatever it was exactly, is not recognized today among persons concerned with such matters. Being of reputation as a platform speaker in his earlier years, his topics included “Canada during the Victorian Age,” “Some Scottish Pioneers in Canada,” and “Some Ideals of Citizenship.”
