MacRae, Donald
(23 Dec. 1896-21 Dec. 1988), dentist, soldier, sportsman. (Dan MacRae, Major Donald MacRae, Dr Donald MacRae) Born in the “Three Bridges” area of northern GC on his parents’ farm, which was on Lot 30 in the 7th Concession of Kenyon Township. Parents: William Norman (form William Donald also found) MacRae and his wife Agnes Burton Campbell. He attended the local public school and continuation school at Maxville. During WWI he joined the Eastern Ontario Regiment and afterwards the Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) of Canada, and served overseas. After the war he studied dentistry at McGill, graduating with the degree of D.D.S. in the spring of 1925. In the interwar period, he had his dental practice in the mercantile area of downtown Montreal, at one period in the Sun Life Building.
WWII having come, he served overseas as an officer in a Pioneer unit, with the rank of major. Resuming his dental practice in Montreal after WWII, he continued it until he was about 80 in the 1970s. After the war also, and back in Montreal, he served as an officer in the Royal Montreal Regiment. He became widely known through his activity over many years in promoting the art of military and recreational rifle shooting. In 1950, he was head of the prizewinning Canadian team at the Bisley rifle competition in England. In 1956, he was head of the Canadian army cadet team of sharpshooters at Bisley. (Glengarry News 12 April 1956) He served as president of the Province of Quebec Rifle Association, and he was a life governor of the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association, and an honorary life member of the National Rifle Association of Great Britain. He died at Ste. Anne’s Military Hospital, on the Island of Montreal. Burial was at the Dunvegan Cemetery. He was married to Elsie Lillian Jaques. (two children)
