Marcoux, François-Xavier
(20 Dec. 1805-17 Aug. 1883), clergyman. Born at Les Cèdres, Que. Parents: François Marcoux and his wife Josephte [sic in sources] Rainville. He was ordained to the priesthood, 6 March 1830. From 1830 to 1832, he was priest at Caughnawaga , and from 1832 to 1883 at St. Regis. It was at St. Regis that he died. He was one of the three witnesses to the document of 1 June 1847 by which the St. Regis Indians surrendered to the Crown the strip of land along the western side of GC which is still known as Indian Lands. His name appears on the document as “François Marcoux, Prêtre.” In 1864 he was among the clergy who took part in the consecration of the new church at St. Andrew’s West. (True Witness 22 July 1864).
