Markson was a general merchant at the Stone Store in Alexandria, continuing the business of his father, and was a prominent member of the Alexandria business community for many years, and served as a town councillor. In 1928 he bought the Alexandria gristmill property, the Glengarry Mills, from the estate of John McMartin.
