McCormick, John Angus
(23 June 1868-died 7 or 8 July 1915, aged 47), journalist. (John A. McCormick, J. A. McCormick) (both dates of death found in obituaries) Born at Meadow Bay, Charlottenburgh Township, GC. Parents: Donald (Dan) McCormick and his wife Mary MacGillis. As a youth, John A. McCormick worked in the Alexandria office of John F. McGregor. Turning soon to newspaper interests, McCormick worked successively for the Glengarrian in Alexandria, the Cornwall Standard, the Cornwall Freeholder, and the Ottawa Journal, belonging for the last three years of his life to what his obituary in the Freeholder called the Journal’s “editorial force.” His Freeholder obituary, which calls him “a born newspaper man,” says that he “was the originator of and moving spirit in the Old Boys Reunion, in Cornwall, in 1906, and the Souvenir numbers of The Freeholder, issued in connection with that event and some years before to commemorate the 50th anniversary of this journal, are enduring testimony to his energy.” Presumably the souvenir work first named in this tribute was or includes the volume called the Souvenir of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Commemorating Old Boys’ Reunion at Cornwall, Ontario August 11-15, 1906 (Cornwall, published by the Freeholder, 1906; 172 unnumbered pp.). Heavily illustrated and containing a wealth of factual detail, it is much admired and sought by collectors of GC material, and is a valuable source of historical data despite being intended essentially as a promotional volume for Cornwall and area. The Old Boys Reunion was itself a highly successful event. McCormick was married to Irene Carr on 19 Jan. 1898. There were no children to the marriage. John A. McCormick died at the age of 47 in the Hotel Dieu Hospital, Cornwall, unexpectedly after a short illness. Roman Catholic. The burial was at St. Columban’s cemetery, Cornwall. He was a nephew of Rory McCormick the centenarian.
