McDermid, Edith Ernestine

(1896-14 June 1952), teacher. (Edith McDermid) Born in Cornwall Township, Island Road, Martintown area. Parents: Archibald McDermid (brother of Donald A. and Finlay McDermid) and his second wife Harriet MacCallum (daughter of Rev. Daniel MacCallum). Edith McDermid attended high school in Cornwall. She received her B. A. from Queen’s University in 1924, and became a teacher. She taught at Grimsby, Mitchell, North Bay, Madoc and Chesterville, all in Ont. At Madoc, she was the principal of her school for 12 years. In her last teaching assignment, or at least what must have been her last extended assignment, she taught at Chesterville High School 1947-1951, but the statement that she was the principal there is in error. She died in Cornwall General Hospital of cancer while still in her 50s. She is buried at the North Branch Cemetery, GC. She was unmarried.
