McDonell, Bernard Allison

(15 July 1918- 21 Jan. 1989), farmer. (Bernard A. McDonell, Bernard McDonell, Bernie McDonell) Born at Bridge End, GC. Parents: Christopher McDonell, who was of a family known as the “Gill” McDonells, and his wife Annie McDonald. Bernard A. McDonell was a dairy and cash crop farmer in the 5th Concession of Lancaster Township, in the Bridge End area. One of the progressive farmers of his time, he was inducted in 1997 into the Glengarry Agriculture Wall of Fame. Besides being a councillor, deputy reeve and (from 1986 to 1988) reeve of Lancaster Township, he was one of the founders of the Glengarry Sports Palace, Alexandria. He died at the Hotel Dieu Hospital, Cornwall. Roman Catholic. The burial was at Glen Nevis. He was married in 1941 to Mary Elizabeth (Bessie) McLeod. (twelve children, ten surviving him.)
