McIntosh, Anselm
(21 April 1853-30 Oct. 1916), timberman. Born presumably at his parents’ home on Lot A, 2nd Concession of Lochiel Township, GC. Parents: John and Mary McIntosh. Anselm McIntosh, of Michigan, in 1890 bought 14 village lots in Alexandria from J. Lockie Wilson. (Glengarrian 30 May 1890) In 1902, when the bell on St. Finnan’s Cathedral, Alexandria, had to be replaced, Anselm McIntosh, of Sault Ste. Marie, gave three new bells as a gift. The bells ranged in size from 520 pounds to over two tons, and were made in Troy, N. Y. Each bell carried the name of the cathedral, Pope Leo XIII, Bishop Macdonell, and the date of manufacture of the bells, 15 Aug. 1902. In a Sault Ste. Marie (Ont.) city directory of 1903-1904, Anselm McIntosh is described as a “Land Agent (Timber).” And a Sault Ste. Marie obituary of McIntosh says he “followed the occupation of timber cruiser in various parts of Canada and in Michigan.” The last fifteen years of his life he spent at Sault Ste. Marie, where he “was prominently identified in extensive business interests.” He died at the General Hospital, Sault Ste. Marie, Ont. The survivors included three unmarried sisters in Alexandria. A frequent visitor to Alexandria, he spent his last winter with these sisters before “returning to the scene of his labours in May last.” The obituaries do not mention a wife or children. However, Edwin Mcdonald, who mentions the gift to St. Finnan’s, says he “married a non-Catholic in her Church and was buried in [Sault Ste. Marie],” and he adds that McIntosh’s aunt was married to O’Kane Cameron.
