McKay, John
(d. 5 July 1810), fur trader. Born perhaps in Scotland. Died in Manitoba. He was a fur trader with the HBC from 1790 till his death. He may have been the brother of Donald MacKay the fur trader (as is proposed in the Dictionary of Canadian Biography). Since there is a possibility (if small) that the historian W. S. Wallace was correct in assigning Donald MacKay the fur trader to the Glengarry County U E Loyalist family, John McKay could therefore have had a Glengarry background. Otherwise, no GC connection is known for John McKay.
His life by T. R. McCloy in Dictionary of Canadian Biography Vol. V (he does not have a life in Wallace and MDict)
