McLennan, Alexander R.
(31 Aug. 1852-21 April 1911), contractor. Born presumably at Glen Donald, in GC. Parents: Roderick McLennan and his wife Hannah McDonald. Like his brothers Angus R. McLennan and R. R. (Big Rory) McLennan, he was a prominent athlete in his earlier years. The Glengarrian, of Alexandria, controlled by his brother Big Rory, reported on 3 June 1887 that Alex R. McLennan had “obtained an extensive contract on the Minneapolis, Sault St. Marie and Atlantic Railway, near Scotch point, Michigan,” with the result that he “is in want of an army of Glengarry axmen on his work in Michigan,” and that “Glengarrymen, especially good axmen, have now an opportunity of distinguishing themselves.” On 16 July of that year, his brother Angus R. McLennan wrote to Big Rory from “McLennans Camp” stating that that Alexander had “about Three hundred men on the work” for this railway. Correspondence in Big Rory’s papers for 1888 indicates that by this time Alexander was in financial need, and there is mention that he has stopped drinking. By late 1889, he was in Chile, and had about 300 men working under him, but had as yet made no money, and was vowing that if he is not successful, “I will never Return.” In 1890, still in Chile, he asked for $500 to help him get home again. At the time of Big Rory’s death, Alexander’s address was Selkirk, Manitoba. He was one of the four executors of his brother Big Rory’s will, and he was one of its principal beneficiaries, and his son Alexander R. was designated to be the ultimate legatee of the estate. Alexander died in Toronto, and is buried in St. Andrew’s cemetery, Williamstown. His obituary notes that he “spent many years in the west and in South America.” He was married to Adelie Adeline Juan (20 July 1871-27 Nov. 1916), of Swiss and South American origins. (five children) See the entry for his brother R. R. (Big Rory) McLennan for a fuller description of his McLennan family connections.
