McLeod, Arthur A.
(died 16 March 1957, aged 77), court clerk, lawyer. (Arthur A. Mcleod) Born at Chippewa Falls, Wisc. Parents: Kenneth A. McLeod, who was born in Scotland, and his wife Annabel Gough, who was born in Northern Ireland. At Chippewa Falls, he attended high school and business college. From 1904 he was a resident of Madison, Wisc., and he was admitted to the Wisconsin bar in 1915. During four decades, he was clerk of the Wisconsin Supreme Court, 1915-1955, at Madison. It is said that “He was the youngest state supreme court clerk in the nation when he assumed that position.” Obviously, McLeod was not a Glengarrian, but he had GC connections through his kindred, and he is interesting because of the connection with Chippewa Falls, a place important to the Glengarrians in the great days of lumbering. The 1930 census states that his wife’s Christian name was Justina, and that she was born in Wisconsin, and was of French-Canadian descent. He died at his home, presumably in Madison. (three daughters) He was buried at Chippewa Falls. Roman Catholic.
McLeod was mentioned as holding the court clerk position in the obituaries of his uncle Malcolm McLeod, and of his aunt, Miss Flora McLeod of Apple Hill, GC, 87, a native of the Isle of Skye who died in Cornwall in 1942, the latter obituary stating, quite incorrectly, that he was “her only living relative.” (Standard Freeholder 9 Dec. 1936, 27 April 1942)
