McPhee, Duncan A.

(28 Dec. 1899-10 Oct. 1975), wireless expert, communications technician. Born in Glen Robertson, GC. Parents: Mr and Mrs Robert McPhee. He attended schools in GC and Montreal, and was trained in telephones and telegraphy. He enlisted during WWI as an underage soldier, and served with the Royal Canadian 24th Regiment overseas. In the 1920s he served with the Canadian merchant marine, and was a wireless operator on the ships Canadian Raider and Minoa. When he joined the Marconi Co. in 1926, he began what proved to be a 38 year association with the Marconi Co. and its successor COTC (Canadian Overseas Telecommunications Corporation). He served at Glace Bay, N. S., and at Yamachiche, Que. At the time of his retirement in Dec. 1964, he was managing engineer for COTC at Drummondville, Que., being in charge of wireless communications to Europe, the West Indies and Australia. An obituary stated, “He is acknowledged as one of Canada’s early pioneers in radio technology and radio broadcasting.” In 1931 he was married to Irene Tellier, of North Lancaster, GC. He died at Lachine, Que. He was a close relative (probably an uncle) of the actress Joan Tetzel. His funeral service was at Glen Robertson.
