Munroe, Finlay
(1889-27 Oct. 1939; age at death also given as 52, so 1889 date may be too late), physician. Born on his parents’ farm on Lot A, 7th Concession of Roxborough Township, the location being also described, correctly enough but less precisely, as Maxville or Maxville West. Parents: Peter Munroe and his wife Ellen McDiarmid. Later, with his second wife Margaret AIRD, Peter Munroe, the father of the subject of the present article, lived in retirement in Maxville. Finlay Munro, the subject of the present article, received his medical degree from McGill University in 1913. Later that year he passed his final examinations for the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario. (Glengarry News 6 June and 28 Nov. 1913) Young Dr Munroe served in England and France in the First World War, going overseas with the 154th Battalion as a captain. The 154th, which was dispersed in England, was intended to be a Highland battalion, and was one of the predecessors of the SDG Highlanders regiment. Dr Munroe was awarded the MC for his services in the war. His brother Leonard Munroe (1896-1916), who also belonged to the 154th Battalion, was killed in the war. After the war, Dr Munroe settled as a general practitioner at Paris, Ont. There he practised medicine till his sudden death from a heart attack in 1939 at a relatively early age. (two children) He was married to Rhoda Logan (d. 1948). Presbyterian. He was medical officer of health for Paris, and also served on the board of education. Mrs Edith MacLean was his sister. Also, Dr Munroe was a first cousin of Thomas W. Munro and of Dr A.T. Munroe. His son-in-law Rev. H. Keith Markell, a native of Wales, Ont. (west of Cornwall), was a professor at the Presbyterian College and Faculty of Divinity at McGill.
