Murison, Mrs Ross George

(died 21 Oct. 1918, in her 52nd year). (Margaret Ferguson) Her father William Ferguson (d. 30 Aug. 1890), a Presbyterian minister, was minister of the West Church, Kirk Hill, from 1882 till his death. He was a native of Charlottenburgh Township GC, and was a descendant of the U E Loyalist Peter Ferguson. The Rev. Donald MacMillan notes that the Rev. William Ferguson was “one of the comparatively few Glengarrians to serve in the ministry in the county.” Margaret Ferguson married Ross George Murison. She was the author of the following publications relating to GC history, listed here by title without an attempt to determine how the text of one relates to that of another: (1) “The Loyalists of Glengarry,” in the Annual Transactions 1903 and 1904 (Toronto, actual date of publication 1906) of the United Empire Loyalists’ Association of Ontario. It includes some quotations, perhaps not earlier published elsewhere, from Glengarry-area Gaelic songs. (2) “The Rise and Development of the Glengarry People,” printed or reprinted in the Cornwall Freeholder of 28 Oct. 1931 and the Cornwall Standard of 5 Nov. 1931. It is said to have been prepared in 1886, and to have been originally read by Mrs Murison to the United Empire Loyalist Society, Toronto. Immediately before the 1931 publication it was read to the SDG Historical Society by the society’s secretary. (3) “The Loyalists of Glengarry,” printed or reprinted in the Cornwall Freeholder of 16 March 1932 (date of composition stated as 1876) and the Cornwall Standard of 17 March 1932 (date of composition given as about 1886). At the date of 1886, twice cited in this list, she would have been about 20 years old. In her printed works, she appears as the wife of her husband, and her Christian name Margaret and maiden surname are not stated. She died at her home in Toronto, when the war was nearing its end, and at the time of the great influenza epidemic. (two children surviving her) She had been ill for a long time, and had “contracted influenza, but completely recovered from it, when she was suddenly stricken yesterday morning.”

UTA: death notice (Toronto Globe) and short obituary (Toronto Telegram, QF) both 22 Oct. 1918 * note on her in Centennial Souvenir Edition of Standard Freeholder 29 June 1934 p. 12 * Rev. William Ferguson: MacMillan, Kirk, 141
