Murray, William Alexander

(17 Aug. 1880-11 May 1953), farmer and political figure. (William A. Murray) Parents: William Murray and his wife Isabella Gould. William A. Murray was a dairy farmer on Lot 3, 5th Concession, Cornwall Township, Stormont County, and was a councillor and reeve for Cornwall Township. At the Ontario provincial election of 4 June 1945, he was elected MLA for Stormont County as a Liberal. Standing again as a Liberal, and for the same seat, he was defeated in the provincial election of 7 June 1948. Perhaps not a Glengarrian at any stage of his life, he was closely associated with Martintown, which was near his farm. When he was elected in 1945, the Standard-Freeholder of 5 June 1945 called him a “well known Martintown farmer.” He was married in 1908 to Ethel A. Ross (1886-1969), whose brother Duncan A. Ross was the United Farmers MLA for Glengarry 1919-1923. (two children) Murray belonged to Martintown United Church. Burial: North Branch cemetery.
