Reid, Richard Gavin
(17 Jan. 1879-17 Oct. 1980), political figure. (Dick Reid, R.G. Reid) Born Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He served in the South African War, then came to Canada in 1902, and was a farmer at Mannville, Alberta. In 1921 he was elected to the Alberta legislature as a United Farmers of Alberta candidate. He was premier of Alberta from 10 July 1934 to 3 Sept. 1935, leaving office after his United Farmers of Alberta government, badly battered by the Depression, was decisively defeated in the Alberta general election of 22 Aug. 1935. Reid died in Edmonton. He was married to a former Glengarrian, Marian Stuart. (see Marian Reid). The speaker of the Alberta Legislature at time of Reid’s premiership was also married to a Glengarrian (see lives of Ada and G.N. Johnston), as was Jimmy Gardiner, who marked his second period as premier of the adjoining province of Saskatchewan in 1934-1935. The Reids seem to have maintained few contacts with GC, if we may judge by how rarely they are mentioned in the GC area press. By contrast, Mr and Mrs Jimmy Gardiner were well known in the area, but perhaps only after Gardiner obtained an Ottawa base as a federal cabinet minister.
