Robertson, Donald

(born 1795?), landowner, called the founder of Glen Robertson. (Squire Donald Robertson) Born in Scotland. On 18 June 1825, the South 1/2 of Lot 3, 2nd Concession of Lochiel Township, GC, was patented to Donald Robertson, an emigrant from Inverness-shire. This half-lot, which is just east of the present village of Glen Robertson, had originally been assigned to a soldier from the 2nd Glengarry Fencibles, but when the soldier abandoned it unimproved (i.e., he did no clearing or building), it was reassigned to Robertson. At the time of the 1851 census, Donald Robertson and his wife Flora (born 1797?), a native of Canada, were living on Lots 3 and 4 of the 2nd Concession of Lochiel Township. The village of Glen Robertson was named after Donald Robertson or his family. It was earlier known as Charley Roy’s Corner. The name of Glen Robertson was used for the post office which opened at that point in 1874, and perhaps therefore was invented at that time. When the Canada Atlantic Railway was built through GC in the early 1880s, Glen Robertson became one of its stations. Donald Robertson’s son David Robertson was for many years the station master at Glen Robertson. The first postmaster of Glen Robertson was William Thomas Robinson (Robinson, not Robertson), who was a general storekeeper at Glen Robertson. Donald Robertson was a Roman Catholic. In 1929, Mrs Jane Robertson MacMaster, the daughter of “Donald Robertson, founder of Glen Robertson,” died at Vankleek Hill in her 102nd year. She and her husband had farmed at Caledonia Springs. She was a Roman Catholic, and was born at Glen Robertson on 23 July 1827. (her obituary, Cornwall Standard 6 June 1929, Cornwall Freeholder 8 June 1929)

It is not known whether the Robertsons of Glen Robertson were related to the other prominent family of Robertsons who lived seven miles directly north of them at DALKEITH (see William Robertson).
