Shepherd, George W.
(22 Sept. 1866-25 July 1939), station agent. Born in Ottawa. Parents: Captain Martin Shepherd, of a family closely involved with Ottawa River navigation, and his wife Hannah Delmar. He was a relative of the well-known Montreal surgeon F. J. Shepherd. Having entered the service of the Canada Atlantic Railway in 1888, George F. Shepherd was a station agent at Casselman, Ste-Justine, Moose Creek and Maxville, before coming to Alexandria as station agent in 1900. He remained the station agent there, except for a short period at Parry Sound early in his Alexandria years, for some 35 years. When he retired at the end of Sept. 1935, the Glengarry News paid tribute to his efforts in maintaining railway services despite the onslaughts of the Depression. (Glengarry News 4 Oct. 1935) He died in the Montreal General Hospital. Burial was at the Protestant cemetery, Alexandria. A prominent, well-liked railway man and citizen of his town, he was also the secretary for 33 years of the Alexandria Public School Board, an elder of the Alexandria United Church, and a prominent Mason. He was married (1) to Emily Mary Lemieux (d. 1907) of Casselman. (five children), and (2) in 1915 to Rosabelle Smith of Alexandria, daughter of James Smith and sister of A.L. Smith. (two children) By the first marriage he was the parent of Martin L. and Pearl Shepherd. His sons by the second marriage, Louis Shepherd and George S. Shepherd, were well-known businessmen in Alexandria.
