Sullivan family

of Williamstown. Jeremiah (Jerry, sometimes Gerry) Sullivan (1862-11 Oct. 1941), was born at Williamstown. His father Andrew Sullivan called himself a native of Ireland while his mother Margaret McDonald was a native of Scotland. Jerry Sullivan was a distinguished lacrosse player, playing in Cornwall, Toronto and GC. For many years, he operated a plumbing and tinsmithing business at Williamstown. He was married to Mary Teresa (known as Teresa or Theresa) McPherson (1865-13 Aug. 1945). She was the niece of John R. Grant and the other brothers of the Grant Brothers’ railway construction firm, and she had a brother Duncan McPherson of Albuquerque, New Mexico. (See Daniel A. Macpherson for more on what is evidently the family connection)

Jerry Sullivan and his wife had seven children. Their sons (Ellis, Paddy, Bernie, Bill, John and Alex) were all known as lacrosse players but were especially noted as hockey players. Their reputations in sports were largely confined to GC and Cornwall, but the careers of Paddy and Bill brought them for a short time further afield to the interface of amateur and professional sport in Canada and the United States. Dr James Arthur Patrick Sullivan (15 Jan. 1895-7 Oct. 1975), known as Paddy, was described by Angus H. McDonell as “the most notable athlete of the Sullivan brothers.” Paddy Sullivan played hockey for teams in Pittsburgh and elsewhere in the United States, and trained as a dentist in the U. S. His brother Bill trained as a dentist at McGill University. The last surviving of the seven children of Jerry Sullivan and his wife was John Gladstone Sullivan, who died at Glengarry Memorial Hospital, 11 July 1992, aged 93. Alan Sullivan, who has been Canadian ambassador to Austria and Ireland, was raised by Dr Bill Sullivan.
