Villeneuve, Benjamin Francis

(3 Aug. 1899-6 June 1990), butcher, drover. (Benny Villeneuve, Ben F. Villeneuve, Benjamin Villeneuve) Born at Parry Sound, Ont. Parents: Frank B. Villeneuve and his wife Fabiola Marion. When he was 7 years old he moved with his family to Maxville from their previous residence at Dyer, west of Maxville. He was educated at Maxville and at Ironside, Que. In 1922-1923 he played hockey for the Grimsby Peach Kings, and he was active also in other sports. He worked in the family droving and butcher shop business in Maxville, and was also at one time a tea salesman. A prominent Maxville citizen, active in a wide range of public activities, he was a member of Maxville village council, president of Kenyon Agricultural Society, and one of the promoters of the Glengarry Highland Games. He was married (1) in 1926 to Eva Nolan, a high school teacher, and (2) in 1929 to Madeline Houlahan, a teacher. She died 31 Aug. 1992, in her 87th year. At the end of his life, it was believed that his period of residence in the village was the longest in Maxville’s history. (three children) He died at Glengarry Memorial Hospital, Alexandria. Roman Catholic. He was the brother of J. Domina and Osie Villeneuve.
