Whyte, Clement Peter

(19 June 1878-10 March 1959), station agent. (C. P. Whyte, Clem Whyte, Clement P. Whyte) (year of birth on gravestone is 1879) Born at Lancaster, GC, and a lifelong resident of Lancaster. Parents: Paul Whyte and his wife Elizabeth Defoe. He attended Lancaster Public School and Williamstown High School. On 28 Aug. 1906 he was married at St. Raphael’s to Mary Isabel MacDonald (19 May 1883-22 May 1978), who was born at St. Raphael’s. (ten children, seven surviving him) C. P. Whyte succeeded his father as station agent at Lancaster. Thereafter, C. P. Whyte was station agent at Lancaster for 53 years. He retired as station agent in 1946. (Glengarry News 7 June 1946) His retirement had been postponed for at least one year on account of the war. As station agent, C.P. Whyte had the duty during the war of delivering the telegrams to families informing them of war casualties. He died in the Hotel Dieu Hospital, Cornwall. Roman Catholic. He is buried at St. Joseph’s cemetery, Lancaster. He was the brother of Clara Mary Whyte-Edgar. His daughter Evelyn married the son of Archibald J. Macdonald, MP for GC. C. P. Whyte’s daughter Mary Catherine was, by her second marriage, the wife of Robert Percival (Percy) Milligan, crown attorney for SDG. (her obituary GN 26 Feb. 1997) C. P. Whyte’s son Flt. Lieut. Stuart Paul Whyte was killed in World War II in a bombing raid over Germany and is buried at Durnbach War Cemetery, near Munich.
