Jacobs, Moses
(died 19 Oct. 1921, aged 89), merchant. Born in Poland. He came to North America 58 years before his death (therefore, about 1863). He lived at first in Washington, D.C., then afterwards came to Canada, perhaps around 1869. Moses Jacob “for years made his home at Loch Garry, Glengarry,” but lived also at Peveril, Que., and at Lancaster and Martintown, GC. He retired 35 years before his death (therefore, about 1886). On retiring, he went to Detroit. His wife Sarah, who was also born in Poland, came to Canada with her husband, and died in Detroit, March 1916, aged 93, a few months after their 65th wedding anniversary. About a year after the death of his wife, Moses Jacobs went to Cornwall, Ont., to live with his son, the Cornwall merchant Samuel W. Jacobs (S.W. Jacobs). Moses Jacobs died in Cornwall, and is buried in the Jewish Cemetery on Mount Royal. (children surviving him: 4) Moses Jacobs was the brother of (1) William Jacobs, who was the father of S.W. Jacobs, the MP, (2) Abraham Jacobs, whose son Jacob A. Jacobs, of Montreal, discovered the Kerr Lake gold mines during the Cobalt silver rush days and built the terra-cotta Jacobs Building on St. Catherine St. West, Montreal, and (3) Mrs Louis I. Rosenbloom, whose husband had a store at Loch Garry.
S.W. Jacobs (d. 20 July 1950, in his 81st year), the Cornwall merchant, was in business in Cornwall and Montreal over many years. Born at Loch Garry, he appears in the group picture of Glengarrians in Cornwall on New Year’s Day, 1896, printed in Harkness’ history. He was married to Rose Simon, the sister of George Simon, mayor of Alexandria. In Cornwall, from his youthful years till his death, he operated the clothing store which he took over from his two brothers, and which was known as S. W. Jacobs.
