Campbell, Cameron Jamieson

(8 March 1913-8 Feb.1967), aviation authority. (Cameron J. Campbell, Cam Campbell) Born at Maxville, GC. Parents: William D. Campbell and his wife Florence Cameron. He attended Maxville High School, and operated first a general store and hardware store in Maxville, continuing the business of his father who had died in 1930, and then, secondly, a “radio emporium” in Maxville from 1936. Cameron Campbell was one of the organizers of the Maxville Millionaires hockey team of this period. He also belonged to SDG Highlanders regiment, and transferred in Oct. 1939 to RCAF Signals, beginning a distinguished career in the RCAF. He was given the honour of being made a member of the Order of the British Empire in 1943, having at this time the rank of squadron leader. (Standard Freeholder 7 June 1943) In 1944, he was appointed director of signals at RCAF headquarters. (SFH 26 April 1944) In the same year, he was promoted in the RCAF to group captain from wing commander. Following World War II he was director of communications and research with Air Canada and was based in Winnipeg and Montreal. He was married at Maxville in 1935 to Irene Armstrong (22 Aug. 1911-16 Feb. 1990). (two children) He died at Dorval, Montreal. He was a Presbyterian.
