Gillies, Donald J.
(died 29 Aug. 1937, aged 74), grocer. (D. J. Gillies, Dan J. Gillies) Born in Inverness, Scotland. He came to Canada with his parents when he was about 8 years old, and attended school in GC, where his parents had settled. Gillies spent some years in the lumber trade in Michigan, returning to Canada in 1886. After attending a business college for one term, he was employed in Cornwall 1887 to 1893. He next went into business on his own account as a grocer in Cornwall, and became one of the leading grocers in the town. He was proprietor of the Model Family Grocer, and was the first tenant in the Glengarry Block in Cornwall. He served as a town councillor, chairman of the Separate School Board, and mayor of Cornwall. Roman Catholic. He belonged to Knights of Columbus, St. Columban’s Court of Foresters, and the Sons of Scotland.
