Hearnden, George

(fl. 1870s-1903), deputy registrar. In Dec. 1880, George Hearnden, deputy registrar of GC, who had lived in Alexandria for five years, was reported to be leaving Alexandria for Toronto. (Cornwall Freeholder 10 Dec. 1880) In Dec. 1881 he was reported to be back at his old post after an absence for about a year. (Glengarry Times, 24 Dec. 1881) In 1883 George Hearnden, deputy registrar of GC, married Mary McMillan, of Kenyon Township. Her father, Ewen McMillan, was a veteran of 1837-1838 as a sergeant in the Kenyon company of militia. When the directors of the Glengarry Review (later to be known as the Glengarrian) held their first meeting, Hearnden was elected “Secretary to the Company.” (Cornwall Freeholder 9 Nov. 1883) He resigned as deputy registrar, 1888. (Cornwall Freeholder 31 Jan. 1908, based on CF 3 Feb. 1888) In 1889, he was offering money to lend. (Glengarrian 11 Oct. 1889) In 1898, he started a class in physical exercises and military drill in connection with the Alexandria Public School. (Glengarry News 29 April 1898) In a legal document of 1899, he is described as “George Hearnden of the Village of Alexandria in the County of Glengarry, Conveyancer.” In 1903 he and his wife and family left Alexandria for Ottawa. (GN 9 Oct. 1903) He was a Mason. In 1882 he was captain of the Glengarry Lacrosse Club, and in 1894 he was involved in the activities of Alexandria Bicycle Club. (FH 27 Oct. 1882, GN 17 Aug. & 5 Oct. 1894) He was in the local militia 1894-1899, and attained the rank of lt. Evidently very well known in the Alexandria of his time, he was socially highly active, and something of a “man about town.” Clarence Ostrom speaks of him with contempt and defines his occupation as lawyer’s clerk.
