Lamont, Donald M.
(died summer 1942), clergyman. Born in Lyndale, Prince Edward Island. In his early years he taught school in Prince Edward Island. He graduated from Prince of Wales College, P. E. I., in 1913, and later studied in Scotland, but it has not been possible to verify that the place was, as has been stated, the University of Glasgow. Ordained as a minister in the Church of Scotland, he was minister in the years that followed of congregations in Scotland, Canada and then Scotland again. During the First World War he was appointed chaplain to the British naval men interned at Groningen, Holland. After the war he was minister in Canada to congregations in Prince Edward Island, Cape Breton, and Toronto. He was inducted as minister of Kenyon Presbyterian Church, Dunvegan, on 30 July 1930, but returned to Scotland in August 1934. In his later years he was minister of the charge of Kilninian and Kilmore in the Isle of Mull. He has significance in the history of GC as the last clergyman who conducted regular Gaelic services in his church in GC. When he became minister at Dunvegan, Kenyon Presbyterian Church had both Gaelic and English services. In 1932 it was decided to hold only one Gaelic service a month, and in 1934 the regular Gaelic services were discontinued altogether. The Gaelic language in GC had its last stronghold at Dunvegan, but there too it was on the way out. The Rev. Donald M. Lamont died in Scotland “early in the summer” of 1942. He was married to Miss Sarah Lamont (d. April 1940).
