Mullin, Alexander Campbell

(died 29 Dec. 1997, aged 77 or 78), journalist. (Alex Mullin) Born presumably in the Moulinette area, Stormont County. He is described as having lived his whole life in the Long Sault area, west of Cornwall. Parents: Albert Wesley Mullin and his wife Bella Ann Porteous. When Alex Mullin was in his teens, his father, a farmer, was killed in a tree-felling accident. (Standard Freeholder 11 Feb. 1938) Alex, who in his earlier career operated the family farm for some ten years, worked for the Cornwall Standard-Freeholder from 1947 to 1981. As a journalist he concentrated on reporting farm and heritage events. The Glengarry News obituary noted that his face was familiar during three decades at Eastern Ontario’s “fall fairs and farm meetings” and that he was “tall and thin with camera and camera cases slung over his shoulders.” A beekeeper himself, he also published a column “Beehive Notes” over many years in the Standard-Freeholder and the Daily Times of Watertown, N.Y. He was a Mason. He died at the Woodland Villa, Long Sault, where he had lived in his last years, suffering from Parkinson’s disease. Burial was at Ingleside, Ont. Noble Villeneuve, the provincial minister of agriculture, gave the tribute at the funeral. Alex Mullin was not a Glengarrian, but he had his role in the affairs of the county through his work as a reporter with a decidedly historical slant of mind, and his encouragement of rural traditions and local history activities. A complete list of his many signed articles over the years would not be without intellectual interest. One may note, among many others, his article on the artifacts found among the exposed rocks of the riverbed when the Long Sault Rapids were drained for Seaway construction. (SFH 9 April 1957) He was not the Alex F. Mullin who was defeated as CCF candidate for Stormont in the 1949 federal election. (SFH 6 & 22 June 1949)
