MacCallum, Emily Maria

(9 Sept. 1858-16 Jan. 1956), missionary. (Emily MacCallum) Born in Kingston or Warwick, Ont. Parents: Rev. Daniel MacCallum and his wife Jeannette MacEwan. She came, presumably, with her parents to GC in 1875. Her education included attending Miss Lay’s Academy, Montreal. Emily MacCallum volunteered in 1883 to be a Congregationalist missionary in Turkey under the American Board of Foreign Missions. In 1895, the American cruiser Minneapolis was ordered to Smyrna to protect American missionaries there, among them two people in the present dictionary, Emily MacCallum, of St. Elmo, and Rev. James P. McNaughton, of Dominionville. (The Canadian Gleaner, 28 Nov. 1895) Emily MacCallum established a girls’ college at Smyrna, became its principal, and was principal into the 1920s. In 1921 she was given the honorary degree of “Mistress of Liberal Arts” by Olivet College of Olivet, Mich. A newspaper at this time reported, “Miss MacCallum has been principal of the American Collegiate institute at Smyrna, Turkey since 1893…Steps are now being taken to incorporate the Institute as a college with Miss MacCallum as its first president.” Olivet college awarded the same degree at this time to a Miss Mills, who was also a teacher in Smyrna, and who, unlike Emily evidently, was an Olivet graduate. Emily MacCallum formally retired as a missionary in 1929. By the time of her brother Dr E. C. D. MacCallum’s death in 1934, she was in Athens, Greece. In 1938 she was teaching in Athens where she was accompanied by her sister Edith. Emily was with her brother Frederick W. MacCallum and his wife in India in 1945. (see his entry, this dictionary). Emily MacCallum died at Athens. She never married.
