McHugh, Lloyd
(1914-8 March 1993), businessman. (Red McHugh) Born at Lemieux, Ont. Parents: Denis McHugh and his wife Elsie Bradley. In his early years, he operated a barbershop and restaurant at Pendleton, Ont. He was in the Canadian Army for four years in WWII, and from 1946 made his career in Alexandria, where in May 1946 he purchased the Hub restaurant business from R. J. Graham. (Glengarry News 3, 17, & 31 May 1946) The Hub, situated in the old gristmill building in Mill Square, was under its old and new owners a modern, well-managed, pleasant eating place, much valued and much used by a wide public, and indeed a badly-needed amenity in the rather bleak Alexandria of those years.
Besides this, Lloyd McHugh was active in a wide range of business, community and social activities. In 1955 he and Lawrence Sauvé bought the Atlantic Hotel, near the station in Alexandria, from Arthur Laporte. Lawrence Sauvé (d. 16 Oct. 1985, aged 70) was born at Plantagenet, Ont., and spent much of his life in Prescott County, though he also operated the Atlantic Hotel in Alexandria for some years. He was married to McHugh’s sister. In 1958, McHugh, with Cornelius Lalonde of Alexandria, bought a 16-room hotel at Truxton, N. Y., from a member of an Alexandria Danis family. And in 1962 McHugh bought the Alexandria Hotel (now demolished), on Main Street, Alexandria, from Lucien D’Aoust. In 1969 McHugh sold the Hub to Ewen McDonald, of Alexandria. (Glengarry News 17 July 1969) Lloyd McHugh was an Alexandria town councillor and reeve of the town, and in 1964 he was warden of SDG. He was one of the area businessmen who founded the Glengarry Gardens Company to maintain a rink and community centre for the town. He was one of the founders of the Glengarry Golf Club. Likewise, he helped found the Glengarry Memorial Hospital, and took part as warden in the sod-turning ceremony when the construction work began. (GN 30 April 1964) He was active also in attempts to attract industries to Alexandria, and in the promotion locally of sports.
He died at his home in Daytona Beach, Florida. He was buried in St. Finnan’s cemetery. Roman Catholic. His wife was Alexandra MacDonell. (two children) She was born 1915, the daughter of Angus A. Macdonell and granddaughter of D. H. McKenzie the contractor. Her sister was married to Gerald Mcdonald. Mrs Lloyd McHugh died at the Community Nursing Home, Alexandria, 16 April 2005, aged 90. (sp. of MacDonell varies in sources)
