McLaughlin, Daniel
(1 Dec. 1862-27 June 1944), railwayman. (original name Donald, but he used the forms Daniel McLaughlin, Dan McLaughlin) Born in the North Lancaster area of GC at his parents’ home on Lot 30, 7th Concession of Lancaster Township. Parents: Lachlan McLaughlin (Lachlin McLachlin) and his wife Flora McDougal. He wrote in his memoirs, “I began my service as a railroad man with the Canadian Pacific north of Lake Superior, in the month of May, 1880…” For more than fifty years, he was an employee of the Northern Pacific Railroad in the United States holding the position of roadmaster before his retirement in Dec. 1933. On 24 May 1892 he was married at Waverly, Minn., to Johanna Burke (d. 1921). He died at his daughter’s home in Olympia, Wash. (seven children surviving him) Roman Catholic. He was the author of a volume of railroad memoirs: Daniel McLaughlin, Chronicle of a Northern Pacific Veteran (Spokane, Washington, 1930; pp. 56). A choice item of Glengarriana, this little volume has, unfortunately, virtually no Glengarry material. He was the brother of Angus L. McLaughlin and the uncle of John L. McLaughlin.
