McRae, Roderick Donald

(died 23 March 1942), physician. (Rod. D. McRae, Roderick D. McRae, R. D. McRae) Born at Glen Sandfield, in GC. (dates of birth 23 Jan. 1858 and 6 Aug. 1864 found, also the claim, inconsistent with these dates, that he was 45 years old in 1913) Parents: John McRae and his wife Annie McLeod. He describes himself as having studied medicine at McGill University 1885-1887, but if so his name did not get into the university records (at a time when the records were not always complete), and it appears he did not take a medical degree at McGill. He was licensed in 1900 to practise medicine in the state of Washington and from about that time–the early date of 1897 has been given–he was a physician in that state at the small town of Hunters, where he was one of the first settlers. Representing a large district, which included his adopted home town of Hunters, he served in the Washington state legislature 1907-1909. Thereafter, he took a medical course at the University of Oregon 1911-1912 and was an intern in Portland, 1912-1913. He was licensed in 1913 to practise medicine in Oregon (though he does not appear to have practiced there). From 1913, he was a government physician for the Colville Indian Reservation in Washington state, this probably being an extension to his practice at Hunters. He was sometimes described as Dr and M. D., but these were perhaps titles of courtesy. He died at Hunters. The funeral there was reported to be the largest ever held in the town to that time. His wife’s name is given as Flora M. McRae on his death certificate. He may have been a widower at the time of his marriage to her. If he had any children, none of them seems to have survived him. He was a Mason, and is said to have instituted the Masonic lodge at Hunters. A lover and player of the bagpipes, to their strains he “many times… led parades down Hunters streets.” From 1901 he was a naturalized American citizen. The library of Washington State University at Pullman, has a collection of McRae’s papers relating to his medical services on the Colville Indian Reservation.
