Ross, Charles Hamilton

(1 Nov. 1868-12 Feb. 1941), workman, songwriter and poet. (Charles H. Ross) Born in GC. Parents: David Ross and his wife Emily Chose of N.Y. state. In his earlier years he may have lived in the Yukon and Vancouver. By 1896, however, he was resident in Oakland, Calif., which was to be his home for the remainder of his life. In the Oakland City Directory, he is variously described as a carpenter, ship’s carpenter, and shipwright. The Cornwall Standard in the issue of 7 Jan. 1915 reported that Charles H. Ross of Oakland, Calif., a former resident of Lancaster, “has written several songs which have attained considerable popularity.” The Standard went on to say it had received copies of his songs Gathering the Roses, Panama Fair, and Lay Me to Rest beside My Mother, all published by Len Fleming & Co., music publishers of Broadway, New York. Charles H. Ross’s poem “Hark, Brave Canadians!” appeared in the same issue. The Glengarry News of 22 Jan. 1915 published his poem of nostalgia for Glengarry called “Long Years Have Passed.” He died at his home in Oakland, presumably in accidental circumstances, of gas inhalation. He was married to Josephine Anderson (1878-1960). (four children)
