Ross, Donald

(2 Dec. 1837-11 June 1928), clergyman. Born at Martintown, GC. Parents: Hector Ross and his wife Nancy MacGregor. He studied at Queen’s University, with degrees B.A. (1860), M.A. (1862) and B.D. (1863). In 1865 he was ordained as a Presbyterian minister. He taught at Queen’s University, and was the pastor of congregations in Chatham Township (Que.) and Lachine. In 1883 he was appointed professor of apologetics and New Testament criticism at Queen’s University. In 1889 he received the degree of D.D. from the Presbyterian College in Montreal. He was principal of the Queen’s Theological College from its organization as an autonomous college in 1912 till his retirement, due to ill health, in 1917. At the time of his death, he was described as principal emeritus of the college. He was married (1) in 1866 to Mary R. Hill of Kingston, who died 26 March 1871, and (2) in 1876 to Lydia M. Cushing (Mrs Bevridge) of Montreal. He was described in 1898 as having “contributed frequently to the periodical press of the country.” (Morgan) It may be assumed he was the Rev. Professor Donald Ross, D.D., of Kingston who preached at the centenary celebration of St. Andrew’s Church, Williamstown, in 1912. The sermon is printed in the published history of the celebration. He died at the age of 90. (two children surviving him)

Another GC clergyman of the same name, the Rev. Donald Ross, was inducted 11 April 1876 as pastor of the Knox Presbyterian congregation at Lancaster, GC. During his pastorate, the church building of this Lancaster congregation was dedicated, on 14 Oct. 1877. Rev. Donald Ross of the Lancaster congregation resigned in March 1879 to become a missionary at Prince Albert in the Canadian Northwest. He encouraged Lucy Baker, who was a member of his congregation at Lancaster, also to begin mission work at Prince Albert. For a further notice, see Catherine MacSweyn.
