Ross, Mrs Alexander
(30 Nov. 1805-15 June 1910), centenarian. (Margaret McMillan) Born N of Alexandria, in the 4th Concession of Lochiel Township, GC. Parents: Mr and Mrs Archibald McMillan. About 79 years before her death, she married Alexander Ross, and moved to his home at the Toll Gate, north of Cornwall. She spoke both Gaelic and English. Her obituary (Standard) said that she was “probably the oldest native-born Canadian.” Certainly, she was very old at a time when centenarians were rarer than they later became. The celebrations of her later birthdays were noted in the local press. Mrs Ross died, aged 104, in Cornwall at the home of her daughter, with whom she had lived in her later years. (three children surviving her) Mrs Ross was a member of St. John’s Presbyterian Church, Cornwall. Burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery, Cornwall. It may also be noted that at a date approaching a century later the Canadian Press recorded the death of Miss Lillian Ross, who died 20 March 1993, apparently in Cornwall, aged 113.
