Stewart, John

(16 March 1804-21 or 22 Nov. 1883), probably a farmer. (spelling Stuart also found) Born in Perthshire, Scotland. Parents: Peter Stewart and his wife Christiana (Christy) McLean. Peter Stewart, who came to GC in the immigration group of 1815, was one of the founding members of the Baptist church at Breadalbane. He and his wife lived between Breadalbane and Dalkeith on Lot 5 in the 7th Concession of Lochiel.

John Stewart, their son, married Anne (Annie) McLaurin (15 Oct. 1810-20 Feb. 1887), who like her husband was born in Perthshire. John and his wife lived on Lot 9 in the 7th Concession of Lochiel. This was, presumably, the John Stewart who was deputy reeve of Lochiel in the first municipal council of Lochiel, elected in 1850. At the nomination meeting in Alexandria on 15 Aug. 1872, John Stewart of Lochiel (presumably, again, our man), seconded by William Bathurst of Dalhousie Mills, nominated D.A. Macdonald to be GC’s MP. (Montreal Daily Witness, 16 Aug. 1872) The following letter appeared under the title “Longevity in Breadalbane” in the Montreal Daily Witness of 28 Sept. 1876 : “Sir–I send you the following statement which, if you think of any interest, please insert in your Weekly and Tri-Weekly Witness. Sixteen years ago today I commenced to keep a record of deaths occurring in the Breadalbane Baptist congregation, which now numbers up to eighty-seven. In that number I find nine whose average age is 93 years; 18, 84 1/2; 7, 74; 12, 68; 10, 44 1/2; 21, 19 1/2; the average of the whole being a fraction of[f] 59 years only ten out of the eighty-seven under ten years. In my opinion a parallel to the above is not found in every locality, and proves that the inhabitants are a hardy, healthy, Scotch race, and no doubt sober habits had their own share in lengthening the age of the people. The temperance reformation was early espoused in Breadalbane, and the use of intoxicating liquors as a beverage, at any parties such as marriages, funerals, bees or socials, has been unknown in the place for more than forty years. John Stewart, Dalkeith, Ont. Sept. 21, 1876.” John Stewart was a deacon in the Baptist Church at Breadalbane. He died on his homestead at Breadalbane. Peter A. Stewart was his son.
