Stewart, John

(died 3 Feb. 1903, aged 68), farmer, philanthropist. (date of birth 1833 has also been given) He and his brother Peter Stewart were bachelor farmers on Lot 25, 7th Conc.of Roxborough Township, Stormont County, near Moose Creek. In his will, John Stewart (who had earlier inherited his brother’s property) left money to Queen’s Theological College at Kingston, the Presbyterian Church at Moose Creek, the home missions of the Presbyterian Church in Canada, and the Cornwall General Hospital, with the balance of the estate to be used for establishing a home in Cornwall for elderly, poor Protestants from SDG. The earlier attempts to establish or maintain the home in Cornwall were unsuccessful, but there was apparently a John Stewart home functioning in Cornwall in the late 1920s, and finally a new home was opened in Jan. 1931, on Second Street and Baldwin Avenue. This home contained nine residents, and in the later stages at least was known as the John Stewart Home for Senior Ladies. By the 1990s, the home was faced with the problem of rising expenses and aging facilities, and was sold, and the proceeds were converted into the John Stewart Estate Memorial Trust Fund, to be used to support seniors’ groups and agencies in SDG. In Glengarry County, grants have been given to the Maxville Manor and Club de l’âge d’or, Alexandria. The grants for the year 2003 totalled $11,000.

John Stewart died on his farm. He is buried in Moose Creek Cemetery (6th Concession Cemetery, Roxborough Township).
