McMaster, Alexander
(born 26 July 1866; found dead 17 July 1922), prospector. (Alex McMaster) Born in GC, presumably near Laggan. His “old home” (Glengarry News) was on Lots 7 & 8, in the 8th Concession of Kenyon Township. Parents: Mr & Mrs John MacMaster. “A civil engineer by profession, he had helped to lay out the grades on the Canadian Pacific, the Northern Pacific and the Great Northern railways.” At the latter stage of his life he was a “prospector in the Ladner Creek district of the Coquahalla [Coquihalla] mining area,” in southern British Columbia. “Born in Glengarry County, Ontario, he spent his life in the West and in the mountains. The call of the wild and the lure of gold gradually became stronger in him and after completing location on the Kettle Valley Railway, he built a cabin for himself just above the confluence of Ladner Creek and the Coquahalla River and made this his point of departure for prospecting trips in the district.” Struck down apparently by illness when preparing to make camp on one of his journeys, he was found dead “beside the waters of Mineral Lake, practically on top of Ladner Mountain.” The following day after the body was discovered, “this lover of the mountains and friend of every prospector in the district” was buried where he had died. His address in B. C. has been stated as Jessica.
